The American Gold Eagle coin made its debut from the United States Mint back in 1986. Initially available in all four weights in bullion and solely in the 1 oz weight in proof, fractional-weight coins in proof emerged in 1987 and 1988, with the burnished version introduced across all weights in 2006 during the series’ 20th anniversary. All American Gold Eagle coins hail from the West Point Mint, one of the prestigious US Mint facilities. Not only responsible for producing the American Gold Eagle but also its popular counterpart, the American Silver Eagle.
The obverse of the 2017 1 oz American Gold Eagle features Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ iconic image of Liberty, crafted in 1907 and originally gracing the $20 Gold Double Eagle until 1933. So scarce are the final issues of those coins that one recently fetched nearly $9 million.
On the reverse, the American Gold Eagle flaunts a design by sculptor and artist Miley Busiek, depicting a male bald eagle soaring over the nest where a group of hatchlings rests under the watchful eye of a female eagle.
