The South African Gold Krugerrand was introduced as a way to promote South Africa’s rich natural gold reserves. From its launch in 1967 until 1979, the Krugerrand was the only gold bullion coin available to private investors. Its success led to the release of smaller, fractional-ounce coins in 1980, long before most other gold coin programs existed. At that time, the only other major gold bullion coin available was the Canadian Gold Maple Leaf, which offered just a 1 oz option.

The obverse of the 1 oz South African Gold Krugerrand features a portrait of Paul Kruger, designed by Otto Schultz in the late 19th century. Kruger was a former president of the South African Republic, and this design was first used on gold coins in the South African Pound series.
