Once in a while, big-name sovereign mints like Perth Mint strike a deal with a precious metals dealer to mint an exclusive coin just for them. Since Perth Mint never compromises in their craft, the world gets another striking work of numismatic art – that can’t be acquired just anywhere. Perth Mint’s primary bullion coins, the kangaroos and koalas and kookaburras, everyone has those. These limited-mintage exclusives, though? Nearly impossible to find… Until now.
The limited-mintage 2021 Australian osprey 1/4 ounce gold coin was struck by Perth Mint for exclusive distribution. (It’s best if you don’t ask how we came by the handful that we have in stock…)
The reverse of this fractional gold bullion coin captures an osprey in the moment of a successful hunt, having grabbed a fish in its talons. Our BullionMax resident bird nerd says this looks like an eastern osprey (Pandion haliaetus cristatus) or “fish hawk,” and would like to point out an oddity in the design… See the way the osprey’s talons grasp the fish, with only one toe visible on the left foot and two toes visible on the right? Bird nerd says that’s because this is one of only two osprey species, along with owls, whose outer toe is reversible – they can grasp prey with either three toes on one side and one in the back (like all other birds of prey) OR with two toes on each side, particularly helpful when grabbing slippery fish. Now, you may or may not care about this particular biological detail – but Perth Mint does! This is the fanatical level of attention to detail they bring to their craft, embodied in every single coin they mint. Artist Neil Hollis, our hats are off to you.
The obverse of the coin features Jody Clark’s last portrait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. You’ll note the weight, 0.9999 gold purity and $25 face value.
We managed to get our hands on a very limited number of these exclusive 1/4 oz gold coins. They won’t last long, so if your collection won’t be complete without one, buy now or cry later!
