Just off the truck, brand new from the U.S. Mint, we have a shipment of 2022 1/2 oz gold American eagle coins in brilliant, uncirculated condition. Note all 2022 gold eagles feature the new design (this is the first year all American eagles will be minted with this updated design).
The American gold eagle’s design hasn’t changed since its first issue in 1986. To honor the 35th anniversary of the eagle, the U.S. Mint announced its plans to update reverse designs on both the gold and silver eagle series back in 2020. Coin collectors were shocked, then excited when the first wave of Type 2 coins arrived in 2021.
The new Type 2 obverse is still the Augustus Saint-Gaudens design of Lady Liberty (inspired by the pre-1933 gold double eagle), so it will look familiar. It’s not exactly the same, though… The U.S. Mint went all the way back to Saint-Gaudens’ original bronze casts from 1907 and used modern technologies to more faithfully replicate the original design. A very careful observation will reveal modifications to the capitol building, stars, torch and other details. (See the bottom of this page for a detailed list of design changes from the U.S. Mint.) You’ll note the words “LIBERTY” and the 2022 year of minting on the obverse as well.
The gold American eagle’s reverse design comes from Artistic Infusion Program’s designer, Jennie Norris, and was scu;pted by medallic artist Renata Gordon. It’s a remarkably lifelike close-up of a bald eagle’s profile. The noble bird of prey seems to make direct eye contact with you. The design is so crisp and vivid you can almost see the eagle’s feathers moving in the wind. Inscriptions include “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” “IN GOD WE TRUST,” along with the gold weight of 1/2 oz and its $25 face value.
These 1/2 oz gold “half eagle” coins have been a popular item among collectors for decades. They’re significantly more affordable than their 1 oz big brothers, and therefore accessible to a wider range of coin enthusiasts. Because of their popularity and demand, if you want to ensure you get your brand new 2022 American gold eagle in brilliant uncirculated condition, we recommend buying right now!
In 1986, the U.S. Mint started making gold coins once again after a hiatus of over 50 years. Back then, modern gold coins were relatively rare. Most bullion buyers relied on either the Krugerrand or the Canadian gold maple leaf. Due to the apartheid-era economic sanctions against South Africa, American gold buyers had money to spend but not a lot of options. So the U.S. Mint decided to give them one, and they had an instant hit on their hands. Nearly every year since, American gold eagle coins in four weights (1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz and 1/10 oz) have been minted and sold by the millions to collectors and investors worldwide. (Yes, the gold American eagle is incredibly popular outside the U.S. as well – say what you will about America’s reputation overseas, even folks who aren’t big fans of U.S. politics love our gold!)
The combination of exceptional quality year after year, a large number of coins in the marketplace and nigh-insatiable demand have made gold American eagles a favorite for decades.
