Buchanan’s presidency coincided with an economic downturn known as the Panic of 1857. The financial crisis, characterized by a banking collapse and high unemployment, posed significant economic challenges for the country. Buchanan’s response to the crisis was criticized, and some viewed his policies as inadequate.

The obverse of the 2010-W US Mint First Spouse Buchanan’s Liberty Gold Coin showcases Christian Gobrecht’s iconic portrayal of Lady Liberty, a design that gained popularity from 1838 to 1907 on the US Eagle gold coin.

Flip the 2010-W 1/2 oz First Spouse Buchanan’s Liberty Gold Coin, and the reverse reveals a seated James Buchanan at a desk, commemorating his presidency from 1857 to 1861 as the 15th President of the United States.
