Introduced in 1850, the Gold Double Eagle stood as the largest denomination within the US Eagle gold coin series, bearing a face value of $20 (USD). This coin played a pivotal role in international commerce and boasts a rich history marked by only two distinct designs. Crafted by James B. Longacre, the original design now offers collectors and investors the opportunity to own certified 1878-S Pre-33 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coins, now available for purchase online from BullionMax.
Coin Highlights:
In 1878, the United States Mint released the Liberty Gold Double Eagles across three branch mints. Coins minted at the San Francisco Mint notably comprised the highest original volume, reaching 1.739 million coins. The Philadelphia Mint contributed 543,625 coins, while the Carson City Mint issued a nominal volume of just 13,180 coins.
Designed by James B. Longacre in 1849, the Liberty Gold Double Eagles feature Longacre’s obverse bust of Liberty, reminiscent of Christian Gobrecht’s 1838 bust found on other denominations of the US Eagle during that era. Longacre’s reverse design offered a more intricate interpretation of the heraldic eagle based on the Great Seal of the United States.
The obverse design of the 1878-S $20 Liberty Double Eagle showcases a left-profile effigy of Liberty, adorned with a coronet crown and encircled by 13 stars.
On the reverse, the 1878-S Pre-33 Liberty Gold Double Eagles display the Great Seal of the United States, featuring a prominent US national shield, arrows of war, and olive branch of peace. A ring of 13 stars above the eagle’s head is inscribed with the national motto.
These 1878-S Pre-33 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagles have received an AU58 grade from the NGC, indicating coins at the highest end of the About Uncirculated range, displaying only minimal signs of friction on the highest relief points, along with medium to near-full mint luster.
