The HMS Bounty and the Pitcairn Islands hold a unique place in maritime history. The Bounty is well-known for the mutiny of its crew during its first voyage in the late 1780s, and the current population of the Pitcairn Islands can trace their ancestry to these mutineers. Now, the 2024 1/4 oz Pitcairn Islands Silver Bounty Coins are available online at BullionMax.
Coin Highlights:
The HMS Bounty set out on its first voyage in 1787. The notorious mutiny occurred on April 28, 1789, while the Bounty was sailing from Tahiti to the West Indies, near the island of Tofua in what is now Tonga. The mutineers settled on Pitcairn and burned the Bounty. The settlement on Pitcairn descended into violence and alcoholism. By 1808, when the island was rediscovered, only one mutineer, John Adams, remained alive, along with several women and children.
The mutiny had a lasting impact on maritime law and ship operations. It led to reforms in the Royal Navy, including more humane treatment of sailors and better management of supplies. The event has also been immortalized in numerous books, films, and other media, becoming one of the most famous naval incidents in history.
On the obverse of the 2024 1/4 oz Silver Bounty Coins is His Majesty King Charles III. This marks the first-generation portrait of Charles III on Pitcairn Islands coinage. The left-profile relief, created by Glyn Davies, shows the king without a crown.
The reverse design of the 2024 Pitcairn Islands Silver Bounty Coins features the infamous HMS Bounty. During its maiden voyage, the Bounty had a crew of 42 men. Of these, 22 joined Fletcher Christian in the mutiny, 18 remained loyal to Lieutenant Bligh, and two remained neutral.
These 2024 1/4 oz Pitcairn Islands Silver Bounty Coins are available in Brilliant Uncirculated condition and come individually packaged in protective plastic flips.
