The Liberty Gold Double Eagles were minted from 1850 to 1907, featuring three distinct reverse designs over the years. The original reverse was used from 1850 to 1866, then the “In God We Trust” motto was added in 1866. Starting in 1877, the US Mint spelled out the word “dollars” on these coins. Five different branches of the US Mint produced these coins: Carson City, Denver, New Orleans, Philadelphia, and San Francisco.

The obverse of the 1873-S Pre-33 $20 Liberty Double Eagle Coin features Lady Liberty in left-profile relief, designed by James B. Longacre. She is depicted wearing a coronet crown, and the year 1873 at the bottom features the unique closed 3.

The reverse of the 1873-S Pre-33 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coin showcases a heraldic eagle with wings spread and a shield on its chest. Surrounding the eagle are identifying marks, including the “In God We Trust” motto, which was introduced on coins in this series in 1866.

Your 1873-S Pre-33 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coin will be delivered in a protective plastic slab from the PCGS. Graded as XF40 by the Professional Coin Grading Service, this grade indicates that approximately 90% of the coin’s original details are still visible, though high points are worn flat and little to no luster remains.
