The Morgan Dollar followed the Seated Liberty Dollar as the second silver dollar design to see extensive use in the United States. The first US silver dollar was the 1804 issue, discontinued in 1806 due to hoarding. The Seated Liberty Dollar was minted from 1840 to 1873, succeeded by the Morgan Dollar. The last silver dollar series was the Peace Dollar, produced from 1921 to 1928 and briefly again in 1934 and 1935. Though the Seated Liberty Dollar had a longer production span, the Morgan Dollar saw higher mintage numbers over its lifetime.
