Product Details

The Mexican Gold Libertad is a stunning coin in the bullion market. First introduced in 1981, it is inspired by a historic Mexican gold coin issued 60 years earlier to celebrate the centennial of Mexican independence from Spain. Today, you can find 1981 1/2 oz Mexican Gold Libertad Coins available online at BullionMax.

Coin Highlights:

  • Comes with a plastic flip!
  • 1st issue of Mexican Gold Libertads!
  • Final mintage of 193,000 coins!
  • Contains 1/2 Troy oz of .999 pure gold.
  • Obverse features the coat of arms of Mexico.
  • Reverse includes the statue of Winged Victory.

The Mexican Mint launched Gold Libertads in 1981. This debut year was the beginning of the series, but annual production didn’t start until a decade later when five weights were introduced in 1991. Since 2002, the Mexican Mint has produced Gold Libertads annually in five different weights.

All 1981 1/2 oz Mexican Gold Libertad Coins come in protective plastic flips. The 1981 debut included 1 oz, 1/2 oz, and 1/4 oz gold coins, with the 1/2 oz coins having the lowest mintage among them.

On the obverse of the 1981 Mexican Gold Libertad, you’ll see the modern coat of arms of Mexico. This design features a golden eagle perched on a prickly pear cactus, shown in left-profile relief, battling a serpent with its beak and talons. A wreath of oak and laurel leaves surrounds the bottom half of this image. The current design of the coat of arms was officially adopted in 1968, although its basic elements had been in use since 1823. This standardization aimed to create a consistent national symbol across all official uses.

The reverse side of the 1981 1/2 oz Gold Libertad Coins displays the iconic Winged Victory. First seen in 1921 on the Gold Centenario coin, this design captures the front-facing image of Winged Victory atop the Mexican Independence Victory Column in Mexico City.
