Product Details

The Canadian Gold Maple Leaf is a popular gold bullion coin, first released in 1979. Initially, only the 1 oz gold coin was available, but in 1986, the Royal Canadian Mint introduced the 1/2 oz gold option. You can now purchase the 2004 1/2 oz Canadian Gold Maple Leaf Coins from BullionMax.

Coin Highlights:

  • Coin arrives inside a protective plastic flip!
  • 26th date for Canadian Gold Maple Leafs!
  • Largest fractional-ounce Gold Maple!
  • Contains 1/2 Troy oz of .9999 pure gold.
  • Issued a face value of $20 (CAD) by Canada.
  • Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse.
  • Sugar maple leaf on the reverse.

When first introduced in 1979, the Canadian Gold Maple Leaf was available only as a 1 oz coin with .999 gold purity. The Royal Canadian Mint expanded the series in 1982 to include fractional-ounce coins with .9999 gold purity. The 1/2 oz Gold Maple Leaf coin became available in 1986 and continues to be a favorite among investors.

The reverse design of all Gold Maple Leafs features a sugar maple leaf. The sugar maple (Acer saccharum) is native to eastern Canada and is known for its vibrant fall foliage and sweet sap used to produce maple syrup. Many Indigenous peoples, including the Anishinaabe, Haudenosaunee, and Abenaki, have long harvested maple sap for food and medicine, developing sophisticated techniques for processing it.

The obverse of the 2004 1/2 oz Gold Maple Leaf Coin showcases Queen Elizabeth II. This portrait by Susanna Blunt was introduced in 2004 as the fourth and final effigy of Elizabeth II. It depicts Her Majesty in right-profile relief and is only the second portrait of a monarch on Canadian coins to be designed by a Canadian artist.

On the reverse, the 2004 Canadian Gold Maple Leaf continues to feature Walter Ott’s iconic sugar maple leaf design, first introduced in 1979. This design offers a natural depiction of Canada’s national emblem.

The 2004 1/2 oz Canadian Gold Maple Leaf Coins come in protective plastic flips. The 2004 release marks the 19th year that the 1/2 oz Gold Maple Leaf has been available.
