This coin first appeared in 1991 with an initial mintage of 50,017. The highest mintage for this size occurred in 1992, with a total of 295,783 coins sold.

Mexican Libertads feature consistent obverse and reverse designs. The reverse shows the Mexican Independence Victory Column with Winged Victory, and the iconic mountains of Popocatépetl and Iztaccihuatl. The names of these mountains come from Nahuatl, the language of the Aztecs. Popocatépetl means “Smoking Mountain,” a fitting name for this active volcano that has been erupting periodically since the 14th century. Iztaccíhuatl, on the other hand, means “White Woman,” and its silhouette is said to resemble a sleeping woman when viewed from certain angles.

On the obverse, the 2024 Mexican Silver Libertad features the national coat of arms of Mexico. This emblem, derived from an Aztec symbol in the 1524 Codex Mendoza, includes a golden eagle facing left, battling a snake on a prickly pear cactus.
