The obverse of the 2025 1/20 oz Gold Maple Leaf Coins features King Charles III. This design, created by Steven Rosati, marks the third monarch portrait on Royal Canadian Mint coins by a Canadian artist and the first to depict a leader other than Queen Elizabeth II in this series. The portrait shows His Majesty in left-profile relief without a crown.
On the reverse side of these 2025 Canadian Gold Maple Leafs is the classic sugar maple leaf. This design was originally introduced in 1979 for the 1 oz gold coin and has since been used across all weights in the Gold Maple Leaf Series, as well as on the Silver Maple Leaf, Platinum Maple Leaf, and Palladium Maple Leaf.
The sugar maple leaf has deep cultural and historical significance, evolving from a key resource for Indigenous peoples to a prominent symbol of Canada. Its place in Canadian heraldry and everyday life highlights its importance in the nation’s identity.
