The D-Day landings, also known as Operation Overlord, took place on June 6, 1944, and were a key turning point in World War II. This massive Allied invasion of Nazi-occupied France was the largest amphibious assault in history, with troops from the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, and other Allied nations playing crucial roles. In 2024, Merrick Mint commemorated the 80th anniversary of the D-Day Landings with these $2 World War II D-Day Normandy Landings Legal Tender Notes, available now at BullionMax.
Note Highlights:
Despite heavy casualties, particularly on Omaha Beach, the Allied forces managed to establish beachheads on all five landing zones by the end of the day. The success of the operation was due in part to extensive planning, deception tactics that misled the Germans about the invasion’s location, and the courage and determination of the soldiers who fought their way ashore.
Each $2 World War II D-Day Normandy Landings Legal Tender Note comes in an individual blue presentation folio. The note retains the original reverse design, with colorized, photorealistic imagery added to the obverse background, depicting scenes of Allied troops landing at Normandy.
On the obverse of the $2 D-Day Normandy Landings Legal Tender Note, President Thomas Jefferson is at the center. The background on both sides of him shows troops coming ashore during the D-Day landings. The invasion targeted five beaches along a 50-mile stretch of the Normandy coastline, code-named Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno, and Sword. Each beach had its challenges, with Omaha Beach witnessing some of the most intense fighting. The Allied forces faced strong resistance from German troops, who had fortified the coastline with obstacles, mines, and gun emplacements as part of the “Atlantic Wall.”
The reverse side of the note features John Trumbull’s famous 1818 painting, the Declaration of Independence. This artwork, prominently displayed on the reverse of the U.S. $2 bill, shows the presentation of the draft of the Declaration of Independence to the Second Continental Congress on June 28, 1776. It includes 42 of the 56 signers of the Declaration.
