During the 1860s, the San Francisco Mint became crucial in producing American gold coins. Before the US Civil War, the Philadelphia and New Orleans Mints were the main sources of Liberty Double Eagle gold coins, among other denominations. However, during the Civil War and the Reconstruction period, most production moved west to the San Francisco Mint. Right now, you can find 1867-S Pre-33 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coins in certified condition available at BullionMax.
Coin Highlights:
The obverse of the 1867-S $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coin showcases a portrait of Lady Liberty. Designed by James B. Longacre in 1849, this left-profile relief depicts Liberty wearing a coronet crown, surrounded by a ring of 13 stars. The date is located at the bottom of the coin.
On the reverse side of the 1867-S Pre-33 Liberty Double Eagles is a representation of the Great Seal of the United States. This design features a front-facing bald eagle, holding the US national shield, arrows of war, and an olive branch of peace. Above the eagle’s head is a ring of 13 stars. These coins are Type II specimens, which refers to the second version of the reverse design.
From 1850 to 1866, the US Mint produced Liberty Double Eagles without the national motto on the reverse. However, in late 1866, the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST” was introduced within the ring of stars above the eagle’s head. Type II coins were issued from 1866 to 1876, before the Type III design took over, continuing until 1907. While Type III coins kept the motto, they also changed the denomination inscription from “Twenty D” to “Twenty Dollars.”
These 1867-S Pre-33 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coins are in AU55 condition, placing them near the top of the About Uncirculated range. You can expect medium to near-full luster with very light signs of wear at the highest points.
