The Liberty Head Eagle Coin, also known as the $10 gold piece, is a classic design from the US Mint. First introduced in 1838 by Christian Gobrecht, the 3rd Chief Engraver of the US Mint, this design appeared on $10, $5, and $2.50 Eagle coins. The $10 Liberty Eagle had the longest run, remaining in production until 1907. Right now, 1897 $10 Liberty Gold Eagle Coins in certified condition are available at BullionMax.
Coin Highlights:
The 1897 production of Liberty Gold Eagle Coins includes pieces struck at the Philadelphia, New Orleans, and San Francisco Mints. Philadelphia took on the largest share of production, minting just over 1 million coins. Meanwhile, New Orleans produced 42,500 coins, and San Francisco struck more than 234,000 coins.
Each of these 1897 $10 Liberty Gold Eagle Coins is graded Mint State 63 and housed in protective plastic slabs. Coins with this grade show a few small contact marks and some heavier marks, with mint luster slightly impaired. Hairlines may also be present, either as scattered flaws or in small concentrated patches.
The obverse of the 1897 Liberty Gold Eagle features a left-profile portrait of Lady Liberty wearing a coronet crown. This design, created in 1838, is surrounded by 13 stars, with the coin’s year of issue at the bottom.
On the reverse of the 1897 $10 Liberty Eagle, you’ll find the heraldic eagle, a bold design by Gobrecht. The eagle faces forward, with the US national shield on its chest, clutching arrows and an olive branch in its talons. As a Type II coin, it also includes a banner above the eagle bearing the national motto.
