Christian Gobrecht, the third Chief Engraver of the United States Mint, created the Liberty Head Eagle design in 1838. This $10 gold coin became the longest-running design in the US Eagle series, appearing on denominations of $10, $5, and $2.50. The $10 Liberty Eagle had the longest production period, lasting from 1838 to 1907. Right now, 1901 $10 Liberty Gold Eagle Coins in certified condition are available from BullionMax.
Coin Highlights:
In 1901, the New Orleans Mint resumed coining $10 Liberty Gold Eagles after a brief break in 1900. That year, production ramped up, with the Philadelphia, New Orleans, and San Francisco Mints issuing coins. Philadelphia produced 1,718,740 coins, New Orleans struck 72,041 coins, and San Francisco led production with 2,812,750 coins.
These 1901 $10 Liberty Gold Eagles are available in Mint State 63 condition. MS63 coins typically show slight impairments to mint luster, including small to medium contact marks. Some of these marks may appear in focal areas, and light hairlines could be scattered or grouped in small patches.
On the obverse of the 1901 Liberty Gold Eagles is Christian Gobrecht’s portrait of Lady Liberty from 1838. Liberty is shown in left-profile relief, wearing a coronet inscribed with “Liberty,” and surrounded by 13 stars, along with the year of issue.
The reverse of the 1901 $10 Liberty Eagle Coin features Gobrecht’s heraldic eagle design. The eagle holds the US national shield on its chest, with arrows in one talon and an olive branch in the other. As a Type II coin, there is a banner above the eagle with the national motto, “In God We Trust.”
