The Liberty Head Eagle Coin, a $10 gold piece, is one of the longest-running designs in the US Mint’s history. Designed in 1838 by Christian Gobrecht, the third Chief Engraver of the United States Mint, this design was used on $10, $5, and $2.50 Eagle coins. The $10 Liberty Eagle saw the longest production, minted from 1838 to 1907. Right now, 1901-S $10 Liberty Gold Eagle Coins are available online from BullionMax in certified condition.
Coin Highlights:
The obverse of the 1901-S $10 Liberty Eagle Coins shows Lady Liberty in a left-profile portrait, designed by Christian Gobrecht. Liberty wears a coronet crown, and the design is surrounded by 13 stars representing the original colonies. The coin’s date mark is featured at the bottom.
On the reverse of 1901-S Liberty Gold Eagles, the heraldic eagle design by Gobrecht shows a bald eagle in front-facing relief. The eagle’s wings are spread as it holds the arrows of war and the olive branch of peace in its talons. As Type II coins, these include a banner above the eagle displaying the national motto.
The San Francisco Mint produced more Liberty Gold Eagles in 1901 than any other US Mint facility. A total of 2.812 million coins were struck, with San Francisco issuing over 1 million more coins than Philadelphia. This marked a significant production increase from the previous year’s total of 81,000 coins.
These 1901-S $10 Liberty Gold Eagle Coins come graded Mint State 63. Coins with this grade typically show minor imperfections, including light contact marks and some hairlines. The mint luster may be slightly impaired, with scattered marks, some of which could be heavier or in noticeable areas.
