In 1880, the US Mint produced large quantities of Morgan Dollars at three of its four active branch mints. The lead mint in Philadelphia issued 12.6 million coins, while Carson City had the smallest mintage at 591,000 coins. The New Orleans Mint struck 5.305 million coins, and the San Francisco Mint issued 8.9 million of these 1880-S Morgan Dollars.

On the obverse of the 1880-S Morgan Dollar Coin, you’ll find a left-profile portrait of Lady Liberty wearing a Phrygian cap. This design by George T. Morgan includes 13 stars around Liberty, representing the original colonies, and was inspired by Anna Williams, a schoolteacher from Philadelphia.

The reverse of the 1880-S Morgan Silver Dollar also features a George T. Morgan design of an American bald eagle. The eagle is depicted with wings spread wide, clutching arrows and an olive branch, symbolizing strength and peace, with a laurel wreath beneath it.
