The Morgan Silver Dollar, designed by George T. Morgan, was first minted by the United States Mint in 1878 and remained in production until 1904, with a final issuance in 1921. This iconic coin was in circulation during key moments in American history, such as the Reconstruction Era, the Gilded Age, and the early 20th century. Today, 1886 Morgan Silver Dollar Coins are available online at BullionMax.
Coin Highlights:
The obverse of the 1886 Morgan Silver Dollar features a left-profile portrait of Lady Liberty. This design is said to have been modeled after Anna Willes Williams, with Liberty shown wearing a Phrygian cap, a laurel wreath, and a coronet crown. She is surrounded by 13 stars representing the original American colonies.
On the reverse, the 1886 Morgan Dollar showcases a heraldic eagle. George T. Morgan’s design omits the national shield but displays a bold American bald eagle with its wings spread wide. The eagle holds both arrows, symbolizing strength and readiness for war, and an olive branch, representing the desire for peace.
The 1886 Morgan Dollars had some of the highest mintages in the coin’s history. The Philadelphia Mint alone struck nearly 20 million coins, while the New Orleans Mint produced over 10 million, and the San Francisco Mint minted 750,000 coins. Interestingly, 1886 marked the first year that no Morgan Dollars were minted at the Carson City Mint.
Each of these 1886 Morgan Silver Dollar Coins comes in Brilliant Uncirculated condition, safely packaged in a protective plastic flip. For larger purchases, we offer tubes of 20 coins when available. Morgan Dollars are made with a composition of 90% silver and 10% copper.
