In 1888, the Philadelphia Mint led production of the Morgan Silver Dollar, striking a total of 19.183 million coins. The New Orleans Mint followed with 12.150 million coins. Carson City Mint was inactive during this time, and San Francisco contributed another 657,000 coins to the annual production.

On the obverse of the 1888 Morgan Dollar, you’ll see a beautiful left-facing portrait of Lady Liberty. This design was inspired by model Anna Willes Williams. Lady Liberty is shown wearing a Phrygian cap, a laurel wreath, and a coronet crown, surrounded by 13 stars representing the original colonies.

The reverse of the 1888 Morgan Silver Dollar features the heraldic eagle in a powerful pose. In this design by George T. Morgan, the eagle is shown with wings spread wide, clutching arrows in one talon and an olive branch in the other, symbolizing both war and peace. There is no national shield in this version of the eagle.
