The S.S. Tilawa was a British-Indian passenger and cargo ship that met a tragic end during World War II. On November 23, 1942, the ship was torpedoed by a Japanese submarine while traveling from Bombay to Durban, South Africa. The attack occurred in the Indian Ocean, about 930 miles northeast of the Seychelles, sinking the vessel. Onboard were 958 passengers, crew, and a valuable cargo that included silver bullion. Today, you have a unique chance to collect silver bullion refined from the silver recovered from the wreck of the S.S. Tilawa. The 1/2 oz S.S. Tilawa Shipwreck Silver Voyage Round is available now from BullionMax.
Round Highlights:
Each 1/2 oz S.S. Tilawa Shipwreck Silver Voyage Round is made from silver recovered from the wreckage of the S.S. Tilawa, which rested on the ocean floor for over seven decades. These rounds, refined from the ship’s silver bars, are carefully packaged in plastic flips, tubes of 20, or boxes of 500 for protection.
In 2017, Argentum Exploration Ltd., a company specializing in deep-sea salvage, conducted an extraordinary operation to recover the ship’s lost cargo. Using advanced underwater technology, they located the wreckage at a depth of nearly 9,200 feet and successfully retrieved the silver bars from the seabed, which were then refined into silver rounds like this one.
The obverse of the S.S. Tilawa Silver Round shows a detailed view of the ship on its final voyage across the Indian Ocean. The background features a nautical chart of the vessel’s course from Bombay, India, to Durban, South Africa.
On the reverse, the 1/2 oz S.S. Tilawa Round honors the ship’s history. Built in 1924, the S.S. Tilawa was initially a passenger liner for the British India Steam Navigation Company. During World War II, the ship was repurposed by the Royal Navy for transporting cargo and troops.
