The obverse of each Pre-33 $10 Liberty Gold Eagle Coin displays Lady Liberty in profile. Designed in 1838 by Christian Gobrecht, Liberty is shown facing left, wearing a coronet crown inscribed with “LIBERTY.” Surrounding her are 13 stars and the coin’s date.

On the reverse side, the heraldic eagle stands as the centerpiece. The eagle faces right (coin left), with the national shield on its chest and its talons clutching the arrows of war and an olive branch for peace.

The coin’s design changed just once during its history. From 1838 to early 1866, Type I coins did not bear the national motto “IN GOD WE TRUST.” This motto was added above the eagle in late 1866, creating a subtle but lasting update to the design.
