The Chinese Mint introduced the Gold Panda coin series in 1982 with four original weights, and by 1983, the collection expanded to include a fifth option, offering collectors more variety. Known for its yearly changing designs of the beloved Giant Panda on the reverse, the Gold Panda series has inspired similar annual design updates at other mints. Right now, 1989 1/2 oz Chinese Gold Panda Coins are available at BullionMax.
Coin Highlights:
One of the most striking features of the Giant Panda is its black-and-white coat, which researchers believe serves as natural camouflage, helping it blend into the shaded bamboo forests it calls home. The panda’s rounded head, small ears, and distinctive body shape make it one of the world’s most recognizable animals, adding charm to each design in the series.
Each 1989 1/2 oz Chinese Gold Panda Coin in this listing is housed in a sealed plastic pouch. The Chinese Gold Panda series debuted in 1982 with 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz coins. In 1983, the Chinese Mint introduced a 1/20 oz option, and later, in 2016, all coins shifted from Troy ounces to Grams.
The obverse side of the 1989 Chinese Gold Panda Coins shows the Hall of Prayer for Abundant Harvests, a prominent structure in Beijing’s Temple of Heaven, an important Taoist landmark in China.
On the reverse of the 1989 1/2 oz Gold Panda Coin, the Giant Panda is depicted resting with a bamboo shoot in its paw. The use of contrasting finishes highlights the panda’s black and white fur, giving this image added depth and texture.
