The US Mint previously changed the original (Type I) reverse in 1866 to include the national motto, “IN GOD WE TRUST,” leading to the Type II design. For the Type III debut in 1877, the engraving was altered to read “TWENTY DOLLARS” instead of “TWENTY D.”

The obverse of the 1877-S $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle features a bust of Lady Liberty, designed by James B. Longacre in 1849. This left-profile relief shows Liberty wearing a coronet crown, surrounded by a ring of stars, with the date at the bottom.

On the reverse, the 1877-S Pre-33 Liberty Double Eagle Coins display the Type III design. This includes a bald eagle with the US national shield, along with arrows of war and an olive branch for peace. The eagle’s outstretched wings are connected by sunrays, while a ring of 13 stars arcs above.
