The story of Jonah starts with God calling him to go to Nineveh to warn the city of its wrongdoing. However, Jonah, trying to escape this mission, boards a ship heading to Tarshish. A severe storm soon overtakes the ship, revealing Jonah’s attempt to flee. At Jonah’s suggestion, the crew reluctantly throws him overboard to calm the storm, which immediately subsides.

On the obverse of the 2024 Jonah and the Large Fish Biblical Silver Coin is a portrait of King Charles III. This left-facing profile, created by Jody Clark, depicts the king without a crown.

The reverse side of the 2024 2 oz Jonah and the Large Fish Biblical Silver Coin shows Jonah in a moment of surrender, awaiting the arrival of the large fish. Rather than allowing Jonah to drown, God sends a “great fish” (commonly thought of as a whale) to swallow him. Jonah stays within the fish for three days and three nights, praying in repentance. His prayer, found in the second chapter of the book of Jonah, expresses gratitude for God’s mercy, even in what seemed like certain death.
