In the 1980s, the South African Gold Krugerrand Series faced challenges due to economic sanctions imposed by Western nations in opposition to apartheid. Despite these sanctions, the South African Mint continued to expand the series, adding fractional-ounce coins in 1980. Right now, 1981 1/4 oz South African Gold Krugerrand Coins are available from BullionMax.
Coin Highlights:
Each 1981 1/4 oz South African Gold Krugerrand Coin is delivered in a protective flip to maintain its quality. The 1980 release date marked the introduction of fractional-ounce coins in the series, including 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz gold options. All Krugerrands are made from 22-karat gold, composed of 91.67% gold and 8.33% copper, giving them a distinctive hue due to the copper content.
The primary design featured on Krugerrand coins was created in the 19th century. Otto Schultz designed the portrait of Paul Kruger for the South African pound in 1892, depicting the then-president of the South African Republic (Transvaal) in profile, facing left. The design showed Kruger’s characteristic features, including his distinctive beard, and became the basis for subsequent portrayals of Kruger on South African currency, including the Krugerrand gold coins.
The obverse of the 1981 South African Gold Krugerrand Coin features a portrait of Paul Kruger, the first President of the South African Republic. This design, created by Otto Schultz, originally appeared on 19th-century South African Pound gold coins before becoming the defining feature of the Krugerrand series.
On the reverse side of the 1981 1/4 oz Gold Krugerrand Coin is a depiction of the Springbok antelope, a symbol of South Africa’s wildlife. The Springbok is shown mid-stride in right-profile relief, emphasizing the country’s natural beauty and rich wildlife heritage.
