The obverse of the 1895-S $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle features a portrait of Lady Liberty. This design by James B. Longacre shows Liberty in left-profile relief, wearing a coronet crown. Surrounding her image are 13 stars, representing the original American colonies, with the date below her effigy.

On the reverse of the coin, Longacre’s heraldic eagle design takes center stage. The eagle holds an American shield in front of it, with rays of light extending from its outstretched wings. The reverse also includes the nation of issue, national motto, and face value.

The 1895 release of the $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagles was limited to two branch mints: the Philadelphia Mint and the San Francisco Mint. The total mintage for the San Francisco Mint was 1,143,500 coins, and these coins are highly sought after by collectors today.
