The obverse of the 2025 1 oz Gold Buffalo Coin features James Earle Fraser’s iconic portrait of an indigenous figure. This right-profile design was one of the first major American coins to depict an indigenous person, though it is based on a combination of features from three tribal leaders of the early 20th century, not a specific individual.

On the reverse of the coin is the image of the American bison, also designed by Fraser. This left-profile depiction shows the bison standing on a small mound of earth as it grazes, capturing the strength and majesty of this American symbol.

James Earle Fraser’s designs, which have been used on the American Gold Buffalo since its debut, were originally created in 1913 for the Buffalo Nickel. These designs honor America’s indigenous heritage and were the first major coin designs to feature two sides that focus on native tribes of the continent. Prior coin designs often featured Liberty or the bald eagle alongside indigenous imagery.

The 2025 1 oz American Gold Buffalo Coins are available individually, each sealed in a MintID CertiCard.
