Product Details

The Indian Half Eagle was the final design used on the $5 Gold Half Eagle produced by the United States Mint. First introduced in 1795, the $5 Half Eagle remained in production through 1929 and circulated until 1933. In 1908, the Indian Gold Half Eagle became the fifth and final design in the series. Right now, 1912 Pre-33 $5 Indian Gold Half Eagle Coins are available at BullionMax.

Coin Highlights:

  • Arrives in a protective plastic flip!
  • 5th release of Indian Gold Half Eagles!
  • Total mintage of more than 1.1 million coins in 1912!
  • Contains .242 Troy oz of actual gold content.
  • Bears a face value of $5 (USD) backed by the federal government.
  • Extremely Fine condition.
  • The obverse features an indigenous figure.
  • On the reverse is the American bald eagle.

Each 1912 Pre-33 $5 Indian Gold Half Eagle Coin available here is in Extremely Fine condition. These coins display some of their original mint luster, though light wear is visible on the higher points of the design. The Indian Half Eagles were unique in their time as the first US coins to feature incuse designs, with images struck down into the surface of the coin instead of raised in 3D relief.

In 1912, more than 1.1 million $5 Indian Half Eagles were struck by the Philadelphia and San Francisco Mints. Of these, 790,000 coins were minted in Philadelphia, while 392,000 were produced in San Francisco. This series was originally minted each year from 1908 to 1916. Production paused during World War I and only resumed briefly for a final strike in 1929. Despite this, the coins continued to circulate until 1933.

The obverse of the 1912 $5 Indian Gold Half Eagle features a bust of an indigenous figure. This marked the first time a Native American figure was featured on US coinage. The left-profile portrait shows the individual wearing a feathered headdress.

On the reverse of 1912 Pre-33 Indian Half Eagle Coins is a depiction of the American bald eagle. The eagle is perched on a sheaf of arrows wrapped in an olive branch, symbolizing both preparedness for war and a desire for peace. The eagle is shown in left-profile relief with its wings folded at its sides.
