Following the California Gold Rush, the US introduced the $20 Double Eagle, adding to its existing Eagle, Half Eagle, and Quarter Eagle denominations. The Liberty Double Eagle debuted in 1850, minted in both Philadelphia and New Orleans, with the latter featuring an “O” mint mark.

The New Orleans Mint produced a variety of coins during its operational years, including gold and silver coins. Some of the denominations minted there included gold eagles ($10), half eagles ($5), and quarter eagles ($2.50), as well as silver dollars, half dollars, quarters, dimes, and half dimes.

On the obverse of the 1850-O $20 Gold Double Eagle, you’ll find Lady Liberty in a left-profile relief, designed by James B. Longacre. She wears a coronet inscribed with “LIBERTY,” surrounded by 13 stars representing the original colonies.

The reverse side features the Great Seal of the United States, also designed by Longacre. The bald eagle, with its outstretched wings, clutches arrows and an olive branch, symbolizing war and peace. This detailed design reflects the strength and ideals of the nation.

These 1850-O $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coins are graded VF20, indicating light to medium wear with all major details visible. This grade ensures that the coin’s historical design is still appreciable.
