Following the California Gold Rush, the US introduced the $20 Double Eagle, adding to its existing Eagle, Half Eagle, and Quarter Eagle denominations. The Liberty Double Eagle debuted in 1850, minted in both Philadelphia and New Orleans, with the latter featuring an “O” mint mark.

The reverse side features the Great Seal of the United States, also designed by Longacre. The bald eagle, with its outstretched wings, clutches arrows and an olive branch, symbolizing war and peace. This detailed design reflects the strength and ideals of the nation.
