Product Details

The Double Eagle was the largest denomination of gold coins ever issued by the United States for circulation. The $20 Double Eagle was first introduced in 1850, as the United States Treasury received a surge of gold following the California Gold Rush. The Liberty Head design was the first of two featured on this denomination and had the longest run. Now, 1873 Pre-33 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coins with an Open 3 are available from BullionMax.

Each 1873 Pre-33 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coin offered here is encased in an NGC slab with an XF40 grade. At this grade, coins typically show light wear on the high points of the design. Some mint luster may still be visible. These coins were struck by the Philadelphia Mint in 1873.

The 1873 release of Liberty Gold Double Eagles included both Open 3 and Closed 3 coins. This refers to the style of the number 3 in the 1873 date. Open 3 coins have more noticeable space between the top and bottom of the number 3. In total, three branches of the United States Mint struck Liberty Gold Double Eagles in 1873: Philadelphia, San Francisco, and Carson City.

On the obverse side of the 1873 $20 Liberty Double Eagle Coins, you will see James B. Longacre’s portrait of Liberty. This left-facing profile shows Liberty with a coronet crown and a circle of 13 stars around her. The date is located at the bottom.

The reverse side of the 1873 Pre-33 Gold Double Eagles features the Great Seal of the United States. This design shows a front-facing heraldic eagle with the US national shield, arrows of war, and an olive branch of peace. A ring of 13 stars above the eagle includes the national motto.
