The Liberty Gold Double Eagle was introduced by the United States Mint in 1850. As the fourth denomination in the series, the Double Eagle became the largest coin ever struck for circulation by the United States Mint. This coin had only two design variations, with the first by James B. Longacre. Now, 1873-S Pre-33 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagles with a Closed 3 are available online at BullionMax.
Coin Highlights:
The US Eagle Series started in 1794 with the $10 Eagle, followed by the $5 Half Eagle in 1795 and the $2.50 Quarter Eagle. These coins shared similar obverse and reverse designs throughout the early years, a trend that continued until the 20th century.
The Double Eagle, introduced in 1850, featured a new design by James B. Longacre, who was the US Mint’s Chief Engraver at the time. He drew inspiration from Christian Gobrecht’s designs on other Eagle coins, adding his own unique twist to the Liberty image and creating a distinct reverse design.
On the obverse of the 1873-S $20 Liberty Double Eagle Coin, there is a left-profile bust of Lady Liberty. She is shown wearing a coronet crown, with a ring of 13 stars encircling the edge of the coin.
The reverse of the 1873-S Pre-33 Gold Double Eagles showcases Longacre’s unique heraldic eagle design, known as the Great Seal of the United States. This features a front-facing eagle clutching arrows and an olive branch, with the US national shield on its chest. A ring of 13 stars and the national motto are engraved above the eagle.
These 1873-S Pre-33 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coins are graded Very Fine 35, indicating light wear with visible details. The Closed 3 in the 1873 date mark on the obverse has tighter curls, distinguishing this variant.
