The Liberty Double Eagle was first introduced by the United States Mint in 1850, following the California Gold Rush, which brought a large influx of gold to the East Coast. This coin was the largest denomination of gold coin ever produced by the United States Mint. Right now, 1877-S Pre-33 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coins in About Uncirculated condition are available from BullionMax.
Coin Highlights:
Each 1877-S Pre-33 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coin offered here comes in About Uncirculated (AU) condition, which means these coins show only slight signs of wear, often limited to the highest points of the design. Many of these AU coins retain a good amount of their original mint luster.
The Liberty Gold Double Eagle was designed by James B. Longacre, the Chief Engraver of the US Mint, in 1849. While only a few proof coins were produced in 1849, the coin was introduced for general circulation in 1850 and quickly became a staple for commerce. The Liberty Double Eagle was minted from 1850 to 1907.
On the obverse of the 1877-S Liberty Gold Double Eagles, you’ll find a portrait of Lady Liberty. This depiction shows her in left-profile with her hair tied up in a bun, wearing a coronet crown inscribed with the word “LIBERTY.”
The reverse of the 1877-S Pre-33 Gold Double Eagle Coins features the Great Seal of the United States. This detailed design showcases a bald eagle with a shield on its chest, holding an olive branch and arrows in its talons. Above the eagle is a ring of 13 stars, representing the original colonies, and these 1877 coins were among the first to include the denomination spelled out as TWENTY DOLLARS instead of the previous TWENTY D.
