The Liberty Gold Double Eagle is an important design in American numismatics, known as the first of two design series for the $20 Gold Eagle from the United States Mint. First introduced in 1850 and produced until 1907, it was in circulation longer than its successor, the Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle. Designed by James B. Longacre, this coin represents a classic American gold piece. Right now, 1877-S Pre-33 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coins are available from BullionMax.
Coin Highlights:
Each 1877-S Pre-33 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coin comes in Mint State 60 condition. These coins have an impaired mint luster with noticeable contact marks and patches of hairlines. They may be certified by either the PCGS or the NGC, but we guarantee the coin and grade, not the specific grading service or label design.
The 1877 release of the Liberty Gold Double Eagles is significant due to the introduction of the Type III reverse design. The US Mint previously changed the original (Type I) reverse in 1866 to include the national motto, “IN GOD WE TRUST,” leading to the Type II design. For the Type III debut in 1877, the engraving was altered to read “TWENTY DOLLARS” instead of “TWENTY D.”
The obverse of the 1877-S $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle features a bust of Lady Liberty, designed by James B. Longacre in 1849. This left-profile relief shows Liberty wearing a coronet crown, surrounded by a ring of stars, with the date at the bottom.
On the reverse, the 1877-S Pre-33 Liberty Double Eagle Coins display the Type III design. This includes a bald eagle with the US national shield, along with arrows of war and an olive branch for peace. The eagle’s outstretched wings are connected by sunrays, while a ring of 13 stars arcs above.
