The 1877 issue marked the introduction of the Type III reverse design. From 1850 to 1866, the US Mint featured the Type I reverse, which showed just the Great Seal surrounded by 13 stars. This was followed by the Type II design from 1866 to 1876, which included the national motto. In 1877, the Type III reverse was introduced, which changed the face value engraving from TWENTY D. to TWENTY DOLLARS.

On the obverse of the 1877-S Liberty Gold Double Eagle, you will see a left-profile relief of Lady Liberty. Designed by James B. Longacre in 1849, this image shows Liberty wearing a coronet crown with a ring of 13 stars surrounding her portrait. The year of issue appears at the bottom.

The reverse of the 1877-S Pre-33 Gold Double Eagle Coin features the Type III design. In this design, the bald eagle is shown in front-facing relief, with the US national shield, arrows of war, and an olive branch for peace. This design also includes a ring of 13 stars and the national motto.
