The obverse of the 1877-S $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle features a portrait of Lady Liberty. This design, created by James B. Longacre in 1849, shows Liberty in a left-profile wearing a coronet crown with 13 stars surrounding her.

The reverse of the 1877-S Pre-33 Liberty Double Eagle Coins showcases the Type III design. Initially, the coins had the Great Seal of the United States without the national motto and the denomination as TWENTY D. The Type II design (1866-1876) added the motto IN GOD WE TRUST. In 1877, the Type III design altered the denomination to DOLLARS instead of D.
