The Liberty Gold Double Eagle, introduced by the United States Mint in 1850, was in production for 58 years, making it the longest-used design in the Double Eagle Series. As the fourth denomination in the US Eagle Series, it is the largest gold coin ever struck for circulation by the United States. Today, you can find the 1877-S Pre-33 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coin in certified condition at BullionMax.
Coin Highlights:
In 1877, the United States Mint produced the $20 Liberty Double Eagle at three different mints. Most of the production during the Civil War and Reconstruction Era occurred at the San Francisco Mint. In 1877, the San Francisco Mint produced 1,735,000 coins, while the Philadelphia Mint produced 397,650 coins, and the Carson City Mint produced 42,565 coins.
All 1877-S Pre-33 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coins available here are in About Uncirculated 55 condition. These coins have minimal wear and retain much of their original luster, with light friction visible only on the highest points of the design.
The obverse of the 1877-S $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle features a portrait of Lady Liberty. This design, created by James B. Longacre in 1849, shows Liberty in a left-profile wearing a coronet crown with 13 stars surrounding her.
The reverse of the 1877-S Pre-33 Liberty Double Eagle Coins showcases the Type III design. Initially, the coins had the Great Seal of the United States without the national motto and the denomination as TWENTY D. The Type II design (1866-1876) added the motto IN GOD WE TRUST. In 1877, the Type III design altered the denomination to DOLLARS instead of D.
