Each 1877-S Pre-33 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coin offered here comes in a plastic slab with an AU58 grade. These coins are called About Uncirculated because the 58 grade is just shy of Uncirculated status. An AU58 coin likely has near-full mint luster with only slight signs of friction on the highest points of the design.

From 1850 to 1907, the $20 Liberty Double Eagle had a consistent obverse design, while the reverse underwent two changes. The reverse designs are classified as Type I (1850-1866), Type II (1866-1876), and Type III (1877-1907).

The obverse design of the 1877-S Pre-33 Liberty Double Eagle Coin features James B. Longacre’s portrayal of Lady Liberty. This design shows Liberty in a left-profile relief, with a coronet crown and 13 stars surrounding her head.

On the reverse side of the 1877-S $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle, the US Mint presents another design by Longacre. This third version of the reverse displays the Great Seal of the United States, including the extended engraving of the denomination (TWENTY DOLLARS) and the national motto.
