In 1877, one of the largest labor uprisings in U.S. history, the Great Railroad Strike of 1877, occurred. It began in West Virginia and quickly spread across the country, involving thousands of workers protesting against wage cuts and poor working conditions in the railroad industry.

During 1877, the majority of $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagles were minted on the West Coast at the San Francisco Mint. While coins were also produced by the Philadelphia Mint and Carson City Mint, they struck just over 440,000 coins combined—almost a million less than San Francisco.

The obverse of the 1877-S $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle features a striking portrait of Lady Liberty by James B. Longacre, the 4th Chief Engraver of the United States Mint. Liberty is depicted in left-profile relief wearing a coronet crown, surrounded by 13 stars.

On the reverse, you’ll find the Type III design, which debuted in 1877. This design change showcased the face value as “TWENTY DOLLARS,” replacing the previous “TWENTY D.” inscription.

These 1877-S Pre-33 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coins are available in Extremely Fine (XF) condition, exhibiting light wear only on the high relief points of the design elements, while still retaining traces of their original mint luster.
