Introduced in 1850 by the United States Mint, the Double Eagle was the largest denomination of gold coin ever produced for circulation in the United States. Each of these historic coins contains .9675 Troy oz of 90% gold, with the remaining 10% made up of copper. The Liberty Head design was featured on these coins until 1907. The Double Eagle was introduced following the California Gold Rush to expand the US Mint’s gold coin denominations, which included $10, $5, and $2.50 coins. Struck from 1850 to 1907 with the Liberty Head design and later with the Saint-Gaudens design from 1907 to 1933, the Double Eagle became a staple for trade and commerce.
The obverse side of the 1878-S $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagles showcases a left-profile bust of Lady Liberty, designed by James B. Longacre. Liberty is depicted with her hair pulled back into a bun and wearing a coronet crown. The design is surrounded by 13 stars, with the date mark at the bottom.
On the reverse, the 1878-S Pre-33 Gold Double Eagle Coins feature the Great Seal of the United States. This version includes the Type III design, which marked a change in the denomination inscription from TWENTY D. to TWENTY DOLLARS.
