The Liberty Gold Double Eagle was a prominent coin design in the $20 US Eagle series, running from 1850 until 1907. James B. Longacre, the 4th Chief Engraver of the United States Mint, designed this coin back in 1849. The Liberty Double Eagle became a symbol of the nation’s gold coinage during the 19th century. Now, 1878-S Pre-33 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coins in Very Fine condition are available at BullionMax.
Coin Highlights:
In 1878, the San Francisco Mint was one of three US Mints producing the $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle. The San Francisco Mint, located in the heart of the American West, was responsible for producing the largest share of these coins. During this time, the US Mint had shifted much of its gold coin production to the western mints, like those in Carson City and San Francisco, particularly during the Civil War and Reconstruction periods.
The 1878-S Pre-33 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coins available here come in Very Fine condition. Coins with this grade typically show moderate wear but still retain clear and visible details. The Very Fine grade spans a range on the Sheldon Numeric Scale, often between 20 and 35, with the general design elements still well-preserved.
On the obverse of the 1878-S Liberty Gold Double Eagle is a portrait of Lady Liberty. This left-profile bust, designed by Longacre, draws inspiration from Christian Gobrecht’s earlier depiction of Liberty on the $10 Eagle from 1838. Liberty is shown wearing a coronet crown inscribed with the word “LIBERTY.”
The reverse side of the 1878-S Pre-33 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coin features the Great Seal of the United States. This is the Type III design, first introduced in 1877, which spells out the face value as “TWENTY DOLLARS” instead of the earlier “TWENTY D.”
