Transport yourself back to the 1870s, a time marked by The Long Depression, a challenging period of economic hardship. The debate over the nation’s monetary system, particularly the Coinage Act of 1873, played a pivotal role in shaping the economic landscape. This act, known as the “Crime of ’73,” demonetized silver, influencing the nation’s shift toward the gold standard. Farmers faced particular difficulties during this time. Falling crop prices and a deflationary economic environment hurt agricultural producers. Farmers were often burdened by high levels of debt, and many struggled to make ends meet.

Adorning the obverse of the 1878-S $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coin is a left-profile bust of Liberty, designed by James B. Longacre in 1849. Liberty wears a coronet crown with a ring of 13 stars encircling the field.

The reverse features Longacre’s rendition of the heraldic eagle, known as the Great Seal of the United States. This ornate version displays the eagle with the national shield, arrows of war, and the olive branch of peace. A ring of 13 stars graces the eagle’s head. As a Type III issue, this coin includes the national motto (added in 1866) and a face value noted as TWENTY DOLLARS (changed in 1877).
