The obverse design of the 1883-S $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle features a portrait of Lady Liberty. Created by James B. Longacre, this left-profile relief displays Liberty adorned with a coronet crown and surrounded by a ring of 13 stars. The date of issue appears at the bottom of the design.

On the reverse side of the 1883 Pre-33 Liberty Double Eagle Coins, the US Mint presents the Great Seal of the United States. Also designed by Longacre, this seal showcases the bald eagle, the US national shield, arrows of war, and the olive branch of peace. As a Type III coin, the denomination is fully spelled out as TWENTY DOLLARS.

In 1883, coin production reached a notable peak, with the Philadelphia, Carson City, and San Francisco Mints all contributing to the Liberty Double Eagles. San Francisco narrowly surpassed Philadelphia in production, minting 1.189 million coins compared to Philadelphia’s 1.125 million. Carson City issued a total of 59,962 coins.
