The Liberty Head Double Eagle was the first design series for the $20 Gold Double Eagle coins produced at the United States Mint. Created in 1849 by James B. Longacre, the 4th Chief Engraver of the US Mint, this design was featured on coins minted from 1850 to 1907. Currently, the 1900-S Pre-33 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coins in About Uncirculated condition are available at BullionMax.
Coin Highlights:
In 1900, the $20 Double Eagle Coin was produced at just two of the United States Mint’s branch mints. The San Francisco Mint struck a total of 2,459,500 coins, featuring its S mint mark on the reverse. Meanwhile, the Philadelphia Mint issued coins without a mint mark, totaling 1,874,460 coins.
All 1900-S Pre-33 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coins offered here are in About Uncirculated condition. This means they show medium to near-full luster with very light wear on the highest points of the coin, falling within the AU range on the Sheldon numeric scale between 50 and 58.
The obverse of the 1900-S $20 Liberty Double Eagle Coin displays a portrait of Lady Liberty. This design depicts Liberty’s head in left-profile relief, adorned with a coronet crown. Surrounding her are 13 stars, with the date mark of 1900 positioned at the bottom of the field.
On the reverse side, the 1900-S Pre-33 Liberty Gold Double Eagle features the Great Seal of the United States. The bald eagle faces forward, supporting the national shield while holding arrows in one talon and an olive branch in the other. The Type III reverse design includes the phrase “IN GOD WE TRUST” in a ring of 13 stars above the eagle, a feature introduced in 1866, along with the denomination clearly engraved as “TWENTY DOLLARS.”
