Product Details

The $20 Double Eagle was introduced by the United States Mint in 1850 and was the largest gold denomination ever issued by the U.S. During its 84 years in circulation, this coin featured just two designs, with the Liberty Head design being used for 58 of those years. Right now, 1904 Pre-33 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coins are available from BullionMax.

Coin Highlights:

  • Comes with an individual plastic slab!
  • 55th coin in the Liberty Double Eagle Series!
  • Declared mintage of more than 11.3 million coins in 1904!
  • Limited availability of certified coins!
  • Contains .9675 Troy oz of actual gold content.
  • The face value of $20 (USD) is fully backed by the US government.
  • Graded Mint State 62 by the Professional Coin Grading Service or Numismatic Guaranty Corporation.
  • On the obverse is a bust of Liberty.
  • The reverse features the Great Seal of the United States.
  • Please note that labels in the slab may vary, as well as the grading house (PCGS or NGC).

The 1904 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle boasts the highest mintage in the Liberty Head design’s history. That year, coins were minted at both the Philadelphia and San Francisco Mints. Philadelphia struck 6.256 million coins, while San Francisco produced 5.134 million coins, making this the highest combined mintage year for the Liberty Double Eagle. These coins are limited today, especially in certified grades.

Each 1904 Pre-33 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coin in this listing is housed in a protective slab and graded Mint State 62. Coins with this grade display slight impairments to their mint luster, with groups of small contact marks, occasional larger marks in key focal areas, and some visible hairlines. Please note that we cannot guarantee whether the coin you receive will be certified by PCGS or NGC, as well as which specific label will be in the slab. Coins are selected at random once your payment clears, and all are certified MS62.

The obverse of the 1904 Liberty Gold Double Eagle showcases a portrait of Lady Liberty designed by James B. Longacre in 1850. This left-profile bust of Liberty features her wearing a coronet crown, with 13 stars arranged in an arch overhead and the coin’s date below.

On the reverse of 1904 Pre-33 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagles, you’ll find the Type III reverse design. This side includes an American bald eagle clutching arrows and an olive branch, with the US national shield on its chest. Surrounding the eagle are the national motto “IN GOD WE TRUST” and a face value inscription of “TWENTY DOLLARS.” Earlier versions of the design lacked the national motto (Type I) or had a shorter denomination inscription of “Twenty D” (Types I and II).
