The Indian Gold Half Eagle was the last design series of the US Mint’s $5 gold coin before it was discontinued. First issued in 1908, the coin remained in circulation until 1933 but was only struck from 1908-1916, with one final mintage in 1929. BullionMax now offers a three-coin set of early Pre-33 $5 Indian Gold Half Eagles, each in Extremely Fine condition. Right now, 1910-1912 Pre-33 $5 Indian Gold Half Eagle 3-Coin Sets are available at BullionMax.
Coin Highlights:
Each Pre-33 $5 Indian Gold Half Eagle in this 1910-1912 3-Coin Set comes individually encapsulated within a wooden, three-coin box. Each set includes one coin from each date, 1910, 1911, and 1912. These coins are in Extremely Fine condition, meaning they show only light wear on the highest points of the design. Some coins may also retain traces of original mint luster.
The $5 Indian Half Eagle is notable for its incuse strike, a unique minting technique that presses the design into the surface of the coin rather than raising it in relief. This series was also the first US coin design to feature an indigenous figure.
On the obverse of each Pre-33 $5 Indian Half Eagle in this set, there is a left-profile portrait of an indigenous figure. While not based on any specific individual, this design was historically significant as the first representation of an indigenous figure on American coinage. The figure wears a traditional feathered headdress, with LIBERTY inscribed above, the date below, and 13 stars surrounding the portrait.
The reverse side of the $5 Indian Gold Half Eagle features an American bald eagle perched on a sheaf of arrows. The sheaf is wrapped in an olive branch, symbolizing both a strong defense and a desire for peace.
