Designed in 1908 by Bela Lyon Pratt, the Indian Gold Half Eagle stands out as one of the most distinctive coins in American history. It was the first circulation coin in the United States to feature an incuse-strike design, meaning the artwork is sunken into the surface of the coin rather than raised. This series also marked an early use of indigenous imagery on American currency. Right now, 1910 Pre-33 $5 Indian Gold Half Eagle Coins are available online from BullionMax.
Coin Highlights:
The obverse of the 1910 $5 Indian Gold Half Eagle features Bela Lyon Pratt’s depiction of an indigenous tribal figure. This left-profile design shows the figure wearing a feathered headdress, surrounded by 13 stars. The word “LIBERTY” appears above the portrait, while the coin’s date of issue is inscribed below.
On the reverse, Pratt designed a bald eagle perched on a bundle of arrows wrapped with an olive branch. This design is inspired by Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ $10 Indian Eagle but reflects a simpler and more compact presentation. The bald eagle stands in left-profile relief, symbolizing strength and peace.
The Indian Gold Half Eagle series was minted from 1908 to 1916 and briefly revived in 1929. During its production, coins were struck at four different mints: Philadelphia, Denver, San Francisco, and New Orleans. The 1910 coins were issued at three facilities—Philadelphia, San Francisco, and Denver—with Philadelphia minting coins every year except 1916.
These 1910 Pre-33 $5 Indian Gold Half Eagle Coins are available in Extremely Fine (XF) condition. Coins in this grade exhibit only slight wear on their raised design elements and may still display traces of original mint luster. Each coin comes packaged in a protective plastic flip.
