The 150th anniversary of American independence in 1926 was celebrated with the Sesquicentennial International Exposition in Philadelphia, attracting over 10 million visitors between May and November. Though attendance fell short of expectations, the event highlighted America’s industrial achievements and technological progress. To commemorate this milestone, the United States Mint released Sesquicentennial commemorative gold coins. Right now, 1926 $2.50 America Sesquicentennial Gold Coins in certified condition are available from BullionMax.
Coin Highlights:
Each of the 1926 $2.50 America Sesquicentennial Gold Coins offered here is in Mint State 63 condition. Coins with this grade have slight imperfections in their mint luster, including some small contact marks and occasional heavier marks. Minor hairlines may also be visible without magnification.
The Sesquicentennial celebrations in 1926 reflected a deep sense of national pride, with parades, historical reenactments, and educational events across the country. In Philadelphia, efforts included the restoration of historic sites such as Independence Hall. Designed by John R. Sinnock, the 7th Chief Engraver of the US Mint, this coin embodies America’s rich history and legacy.
The obverse of the 1926 Sesquicentennial Gold Coin features Lady Liberty. She stands tall, holding a torch in her right hand while her left hand grasps an unfurling scroll. Liberty gazes toward the torch, symbolizing enlightenment. The dates “1776” and “1926” are inscribed on the field to mark the Sesquicentennial anniversary.
On the reverse, the 1926 $2.50 Sesquicentennial Gold Coin displays Independence Hall, an iconic symbol of American democracy. Built in 1753 as the Pennsylvania State House, Independence Hall is the site where the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution were debated and signed. It was the meeting place of the Second Continental Congress during the Revolutionary War and later hosted the Constitutional Convention of 1787.
