Product Details

The Chinese Gold Panda Series began in 1982 with four different weights of gold coins, including this 1/2 oz option. These coins quickly became known for their annual design changes featuring the Giant Panda, one of China’s most recognizable animals. Right now, you can find 1982 1/2 oz Chinese Gold Panda Coins available at BullionMax.

  • 1st year of issue for Gold Panda Coins!
  • Declared mintage of only 13,391 coins!
  • Contains 1/2 Troy oz of .999 pure gold.
  • The face value of 50 Yuan is fully backed by the Chinese government.
  • On the obverse is a depiction of the Hall of Prayer for Abundant Harvests.
  • The reverse side features a Giant Panda with a bamboo branch.

The Gold Panda Series launched with 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz gold coins. A fifth weight, the 1/20 oz coin, was added the following year in 1983. Each year since its debut, the reverse design has featured a new panda image—except in 2002, when the mint reused the 2001 design.

Each 1982 1/2 oz Chinese Gold Panda Coin offered here is packaged in protective plastic. As a first-year release, this coin had a limited mintage of only 13,391 pieces. The Giant Panda shown on these coins is native to central China. While classified as carnivores, pandas rely almost entirely on bamboo and need to eat large amounts each day to meet their nutritional needs.

The obverse of the 1982 Chinese Gold Panda Coin shows the Hall of Prayer for Abundant Harvests. This building is the central structure in Beijing’s Temple of Heaven Complex, an important religious site. The image includes the staircase leading up to the hall’s main doorway.

On the reverse, the coin shows a Giant Panda sitting and holding a bamboo branch. Pandas have a carnivorous digestive system, which makes it difficult for them to process the bamboo that makes up most of their diet. As a result, they spend much of their day—up to 16 hours—eating up to 40 pounds of bamboo.
