The Chinese Gold Panda series has been a favorite among gold investors since its debut in 1982. Known for its unique design that changes each year, the series showcases new images of the Giant Panda, with just one exception. Now, 1989 1 oz Chinese Gold Panda Coins with Large Date marks are available from BullionMax.
Coin Highlights:
Each of these 1989 1 oz Chinese Gold Panda Coins is sealed in protective plastic. The Chinese Mint produced two varieties of the 1 oz Gold Panda in 1989, with the Large Date coins struck at its Shenyang Mint and Small Date coins produced in Shanghai. The Large Date coins from Shenyang are considered scarcer, making them particularly desirable to collectors.
The “Large Date” label refers to the numerals on the reverse side of the coin, where the date “1989” is displayed in slightly larger, thicker font. In comparison, the Small Date version from Shanghai has smaller, thinner numerals, offering a subtle distinction between the two.
On the obverse of the 1989 Chinese Gold Panda, you’ll see the Hall of Prayer for Abundant Harvests. This building, part of the Temple of Heaven Complex in Beijing, has appeared on the obverse of all coins in this series since 1982, symbolizing China’s deep cultural heritage.
The reverse features a playful Giant Panda, a beloved symbol of China. This year’s design shows a seated panda holding a bamboo branch, adding to the series’ tradition of unique panda depictions. Throughout the series’ history, only the 2002 release has repeated a prior design.
